I have seen this method of sewing it all up before but I felt like it was fairly confusing to read. You did an excellent job explaining! Thanks for the tutorial!
I made a wet bag over a year ago and made this so much harder than it needed to be when I put the zipper in. Thanks for sharing and simplifying! I have more fabric ready to go to make gifts and have been holding off, not wanting to relive the zipper experience.
Great tutorial. I had actually been working on a tutorial for a wet bag when I came across yours on craft gossip. I didn't do mine, but instead linked to yours here: http://zaaberry.blogspot.com/2011/04/not-as-original-as-i-thought.html
I think these are a great idea, but I have a question. I remember reading a tutorial a long time ago for a rain coat, and there were a bunch of extra steps required to make the actual seams waterproof. Is that not an issue for these bags?
I've never been too worried about waterproofing seams. I haven't had issues with leaking since I'm just putting in damp items, and not filling it with water. I do know that using polyester thread help the moisture from wicking to the outside.
Very cool project. This would be awesome for a baby shower gift. I'll have to make some. Thanks for linking up at I Made It! Monday at Ninth Street Notions. Can't wait to see what you have this next week.
I'm a new to sewing, and learning as I go. That being said, is PUL like oilcloth? Some other blogs I've read have been using oilcloth for makeup bags and lunch bags, so I was guessing that it was somewhat water resistant. Any thoughts on that? I have not seen either in person.
Kate - PUL is a polyester knit that has a plastic coating on one side. It is stretchy and should be completely waterproof. Oil cloth is a woven fabric that isn't completely waterproof (at least the stuff I've worked with isn't). When you sew something with oilcloth it will hold it's shape well, and this makes it great for lunch and make-up bags. Not so great for something you just want to throw in your purse and not take up too much space.
Love the handle! I don't clothe diaper... yet... but I love my wet bag! I keep it in our beach bag and use it to store the suncreens and other leak possible stuff then toss the swimsuits in it when we're done at the beach... no wet suits in my car!!
Thank you, we won't be using plastic grocery bags or ziplocs anymore. I had everything on hand and it took me less than an hour to sew and that was with a diaper change and having to fight barbie and legos for room @ my sewing machine.
I made one tonite. Thanks for the tut. I did my PUL with a zig zag. I read to do this when I was makin my diaper covers. It's suppost to help make it more waterproof :)

What an amazing gift idea! Could have used something like this when my kiddos were little. Thanks for sharing.

I love that print! Why can't I find vintage tablecloths like that?

I was just thinking I needed a new wet bag and I should try to make one myself!
I saw some PUL at Joann's the other day on clearance and I thought about getting some. I should have done it!! :)
The idea about saving zippers is a fantastic idea. It makes me sick to think of all the zippers I throw away. It's also green for the environment!
I tried this tutorial tonight and eventhough I'm a beginner at sewing, I finished my bag in less than 2 hours!! It's great!! Thanks!!Estitxu
